Available across twelve finely calibrated hardness grades covering the full spectrum from expressive fine art to high-precision technical drafting. The soft grades — 4B, 3B, 2B, and B — deliver rich, dark charcoal-grey values ideal for portrait layouts, expressive sketching, and deep shadow work. HB and F are the balanced universal midpoints for technical wireframes, everyday writing, and shorthand sketching. The hard grades — H through 6H — produce pale, precise silver lines with zero smear, engineered for blueprint drafting, detailed cross-hatching, and faint structural guidelines that hold clean under sliding rulers and T-squares.

FAQ
- Which grade should I choose? Soft grades (4B–B) suit expressive drawing, portrait work, and deep shadow shading. HB and F are the all-purpose standards for writing, layout sketching, and general studio use. Hard grades (H–6H) are for technical drafting, architectural blueprints, and precise guidelines where a pale, smudge-free line is essential.
- Is the Technograph 777 a traditional wood-cased pencil? Yes. It is a standard wood-cased pencil that is sharpened to a point as the core wears down — no mechanism, no lead advancing, and no separate refills required.
- Does the hexagonal casing improve grip during extended drawing sessions? Yes. The six-sided profile provides a more secure, stable grip than round barrels — particularly useful during extended technical drafting sessions and on angled drawing surfaces.
- Is the cedar casing FSC-certified? The casing uses top-tier straight-grained incense cedar selected for sharpening performance. For FSC certification details on specific production runs, refer to current Caran d'Ache product documentation.
