The Caran d'Ache Pencil Sharpening Machine is a functional design classic — originally engineered in 1933 and still the benchmark for professional pencil sharpening in studio environments. Built entirely from heavy-duty cast iron and solid metal, it mounts firmly to any studio table or workbench via an integrated desk clamp and handles any round, hexagonal, or faceted pencil from 4mm up to 10mm in diameter — covering everything from standard graphite pencils through to the larger pastel and colored pencil formats.

The key practical feature is the point adjustment dial on the crank handle, which regulates the sharpness of the point from a razor-sharp technical tip down to a blunt, flat point suited for softer pastel and wax cores. Internal cutting wheels are fully replaceable, making this a lifetime studio investment rather than a disposable tool. Available freestanding or permanently clamped to the desk surface.

FAQ
  • What pencil sizes does this sharpener accept? It accepts any pencil between 4mm and 10mm in diameter — covering standard graphite pencils, hexagonal barrels, and larger format colored pencil and pastel pencil casings including the Caran d'Ache Pablo (3.7mm core, standard barrel) and Pastel pencils.
  • Can the point sharpness be adjusted for softer pencil types? Yes. The adjustment dial on the crank handle allows you to set a blunter, flatter point for soft pastel cores and wax-based pencils, reducing the risk of core fracturing during sharpening.
  • Are replacement parts available? Yes. The internal cylindrical steel cutting wheels are fully interchangeable and available as replacement parts, making the machine serviceable for long-term studio use.
  • Does it need to be fixed to a desk to work? No. It can be used freestanding on a flat surface or clamped permanently to a desk or workbench using the supplied metal brackets — depending on your studio setup preference.
