Forty water-soluble colors spanning a wide professional spectrum — from vivid primaries and soft pastel variations through to deep neutral greys — the Caran d'Ache Supracolor 40-set is a serious studio palette for multi-media artists and design professionals working across large-format and mixed-technique subjects. The range is broad enough to handle intricate dry detail layers transitioning seamlessly into deep, uniform watercolor backdrops without needing to supplement with single pencils.

The 3.8mm soft core disperses fully in water without leaving gritty streaks or powdery residue, keeping wash surfaces clean and the paper texture intact. Strong hiding power dry, luminous transparency wet. Housed in a heavy-duty protective metal tin with interior cushioning to prevent pencil movement during storage and transport.

Individual colors are also available as single pencils if you want to fill in specific shades.

FAQ
  • What color range does the 40-set cover? A broad spectrum spanning vivid primaries, soft pastel variations, deep neutral greys, and a wide mid-tone range — giving tonal depth for large-format and complex multi-layer studio work without requiring constant mixing.
  • Do the pigments maintain intensity when heavily diluted? Yes. The high pigment concentration in the Supracolor core remains intensely brilliant even when heavily diluted with water, producing luminous transparent washes rather than pale tones.
  • What paper types work best with these pencils? Watercolor paper with light to medium tooth performs best for wet wash work. Smooth illustration board and mixed-media paper also work well for combined dry-and-wet techniques.
  • Can dry pencil work be applied over dried watercolor washes? Yes. Once a wash has fully dried, dry Supracolor pencil work can be layered on top for fine detail, outlines, and texture — a key advantage of the watercolor pencil format over traditional watercolor alone.
