The Clairefontaine Cray-ON A4 is a professional mixed-media pad designed to handle the full range of dry and light wet techniques without switching between paper types. Thirty sheets of 160 g/m² extra-white cellulose stock with a dual-sided surface — fine grain on the front for charcoal, chalk, pastel, and pencil work, smooth on the reverse for fineliners, calligraphy inks, felt-tip pens, and graphic markers. The heavy-duty fiber construction resists repeated erasing and scraping without pilling or surface distortion, and handles light gouache washes without significant buckling.

At A4 the format suits studio assignments, daily layout sketching, and portfolio work equally well. Top-glued binding allows clean fringe-free sheet removal. Acid-free, pH-neutral, and PEFC certified — color stability is maintained over time without yellowing.

  • Can this pad handle both dry and wet media in the same composition? Yes, within limits. The 160 g/m² weight handles light wet media — India ink, fineliners, markers, and light gouache — without significant buckling. Heavy watercolor washes with large water volumes are not recommended as the paper is not sized for full watercolor absorption.
  • Which side should I use for which media? The fine-grained side grips dry media like charcoal, chalk, pastel, and pencil most effectively. The smooth side is optimized for ink-based tools — fineliners, calligraphy pens, felt-tips, and graphic markers — preventing tip fraying and ink bleed.
