This 6-piece kit covers the basics needed to start hand lettering and journal layouts without needing to know which individual tools to buy first. It includes two ABT Dual Brush Pens — black and cool grey — enough to write a bold title and add a simple drop-shadow underneath it, plus a single Fudenosuke Hard Tip pen, whose firm elastomer nib resists splitting or flopping under uneven beginner pressure, making the thick-thin stroke variation easier to control while learning.

A 3H pencil and vinyl eraser handle sketching and clearing calendar grids or text guidelines, and a dual-tip permanent marker covers permanent linework. The included booklet focuses on basic strokes, spacing, and letterforms rather than advanced technique. Once you're comfortable with the fundamentals, the Tombow Lettering Set Advanced builds on the same tool categories with a wider color range and more advanced lettering tools.
